OVERVIEW OF TEACHING

My main objective when working with students is to guide them through the process of understanding design. I encourage students to begin by learning about visual culture. I also challenge them to confront issues critically and from different perspectives, so that they learn the tools and techniques to arrive at scalable solutions for complex problems in changing conditions.

COMPREHENSIVE TEACHING EXPERIENCE:

SPRING 2017: INTERMEDIATE GRAPHIC DESIGN (2 Sections)
Lecturer of Graphic Design
Georgia State University

SPRING 2017: FINAL SENIOR STUDIO CAPSTONE (2 Sections)
Lecturer of Graphic Design
Georgia State University

FALL 2016: INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC DESIGN (2 Sections)
Lecturer of Graphic Design
Georgia State University

FALL 2016: ADVANCED TYPOGRAPHY (2 Sections)
Lecturer of Graphic Design
Georgia State University

FALL 2015: ADVANCED SENIOR STUDIO
with Professor Helen Armstrong
NC State University
This course explored user experience design and visual identity specific to learning systems.

  • Students designed learning applications for middle schoolers from textbooks in concrete terms exploring the affordances of the iPad. Students explored possibilities for expanding learning of text beyond the duplication of static print.
  • Students explored how the digital learning experience and formal attributes of their learning apps scaled to larger experiences and across media. Students investigated community building and collaboration relative to their apps.
  • Students designed solutions for a sponsored project with Webassign, an online instructional system. Students explored how learning can be measured and how assessment is visualized.

SUMMER 2015: NC STATE DESIGN CAMP
Instructor
NC State University
The K-12 Design Camp at the College of Design offers foundation studios to introduce students to design. In this week-long intensive, I instructed 20 new rising juniors and seniors each day for two weeks. This scaffolded project around sustainability asked students to think through messaging and context.

  • Students created concept maps to explore ideas about food systems and sustainability as well as where design fits into these systems. Students were asked to think about how to show things such as context, scale, and relationships among parts and wholes when they represented one issue as part of a larger system.
  • Students explored relationships of image and text through ideation and iteration exercises. Students designed cohesive messaging campaigns based on issues uncovered through their concept maps.

SPRING 2015: ADVANCED JUNIOR STUDIO
with Professor Denise Gonzales Crisp
NC State University
This course explored interaction, identity, and service design specific to the cultural and creative sector.

  • Students explored the Warehouse District in downtown Raleigh, a cultural and creative hub. Students investigated how design thinking and visual design might help foster relationships among commerce, design and the arts.
  • Students proposed and design visual identities for a funded project sponsored by the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, NC.

FALL 2014: HISTORY OF GRAPHIC DESIGN
with Professor Deborah Littlejohn
NC State University
This course is taught online and was in the process of being restructured. I created new lectures for delivering course content, graded student assignments and responded to student queries.

  • Students developed class community by developing their own folksonomy and by discussing class lectures through the online platform and creating their own discussion topics.

FALL 2014: ADVANCED SENIOR STUDIO
with Professor Deborah Littlejohn
The course comprised of two UI/UX projects, I served in a support role.

  • Students applied team collaboration principles, while working on a sponsored project with SAS, designing a software system focusing on and encouraging users to work across teams to communicate, work together and sign off.
  • Students proposed and designed self-driven projects for interfaces specific to Google glass eyeware. Students considered new directions for graphical user interface (GUI), new context of use for technology, or new types of interactions for how they eyeware might be used.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

FALL 2014: CERTIFICATE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT IN TEACHING
Certification program offered by the NC State Graduate School
The program offers students a chance to demonstrate and strengthen their teaching ability through training, evaluation and recognition. Through critical reflection and application, participants learn the fundamental components of pedagogy, enriching personal growth, and professional development in teaching and learning.

SPRING 2015: TEACHING DESIGN AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL
Design Pedagogy course taught by Meredith Davis
A course focused on design within the context of teaching at the college level. Topics covered include:

  • Identifying historical influences and the contemporary context for design education
  • Developing curricula, courses, and projects, writing goals, objectives, and learning outcomes
  • Evaluating student work through analyzing critiques, grading, and advising
  • Managing the classroom and interactions with students
  • Assessing program, course, and faculty effectiveness
  • Launching a faculty research plans through understanding grants and publications
